Section Two : Creating Your Character

SECTION 2: CREATING YOUR CHARACTER

“You are more than a class—you are a strain.”

In The High Fantasy, your character is defined not just by stats or species, but by alignment to the Plant, your relationship with the Circle, and the journey that brought you here. This chapter walks you through creating a fully infused identity: one that blends mechanics, memory, magic, and movement.

2.1 The Spark: Starting Your Story

Character creation begins not with numbers—but with intention.

Before anything else, answer these:

  1. What’s your First Puff memory?
(See table below or write your own)
  2. What does cannabis mean to you?
    Healing? Power? Escape? Faith? Family?
  3. Are you a follower of a strain spirit, a scholar of smoke, or just vibing?
  4. What are you running from—or toward?

These questions guide your alignment, roleplay, and resonance.

First Puff Memory Table (1d10)

d10Memory
1You lit it in a sacred grove—everything turned gold
2You took one puff and spoke a word in a forgotten language
3You were saved by a stranger mid-puff—then they vanished
4You saw the stars rearrange into the shape of a leaf
5You coughed so hard you projected into the Smoke Plane
6You lit up during a rebellion—your laughter sparked a riot
7You shared a blunt with a creature no one else saw
8You didn’t choose the strain… it chose you
9Your reflection smiled differently in the mirror afterward
10You don’t remember it… but it remembers you

2.2 Choose Your Strain Alignment

Your alignment determines:

  • Your innate resistances
  • How you interact with strain-based magic
  • Which Circle abilities you unlock
  • What kind of strain spirits might call to you
StrainTraitsRoleplay VibeWeakness
IndicaCalm, grounded, defensive, slowPeacekeeper, healer, memory walkerSluggish, hard to inspire
SativaQuick, energetic, chaotic, brightTrickster, scout, visionaryImpulsive, prone to crash
HybridBalanced, reactive, experimentalCreative, curious, unstableProne to strain clash
RuderalisWild, adaptive, fungalNaturalist, loner, feral casterDifficult to control

Mechanically, alignment impacts:

  • Your High Check modifier
  • Your strain synergy options
  • Access to resonance forms (unlocked later)
  • Which strain effects boost you vs clash with you

2.3 Choose Your Background

Your background tells us how you learned, what you carry, and what you’ve already overcome.

Each background gives:

  • 1 automatic Weedcraft trait
  • 1 tool proficiency
  • 1 “Memory Move” (unique RP action or bonus)
  • Optional starting gear

Sample Backgrounds:

  • The Trimmertown Courier – You carried zip bags across gang turf without blinking
  • Growhouse Heir – Your family cultivates legendary strains under crystal light
  • The Smokeless Convert – You once hunted stoners… now you are one
  • Couch Prophet – You’ve spent 3 years on the same couch having visions
  • Dustback Nomad – You’ve wandered through Ruderalis territory—unchanged
  • Clone Lab Escapee – You aren’t sure if you’re the original… but you feel real

Each background can be flavored to match any tone. We’ll expand this with full mechanics in a later subchapter.

2.4 Stat Generation

Characters use standard TTRPG stats:

  • Strength (STR) – Physical power
  • Dexterity (DEX) – Agility, finesse
  • Constitution (CON) – Durability, puff resistance
  • Intelligence (INT) – Book smarts, weed theory
  • Wisdom (WIS) – Intuition, strain awareness
  • Charisma (CHA) – Vibes, performance, persuasion

New Stat: Weedcraft (WDC)

This governs:

  • Rolling accuracy
  • Cultivation rolls
  • Crafting
  • Flavor memory and spirit resonance
  • Growhouse rituals

Weedcraft = INT + WIS bonus (divided by 2, round up)
(This stat is always on your sheet and used often!)

2.5 Character Flavor & Extras

These aren’t required—but add incredible fun to the table.

  • Signature Ritual: What do you always do before lighting up? (e.g., “taps it three times,” “asks the strain’s name”)
  • Catchphrase: What’s your go-to line when the sesh gets tense?
  • Flavor Notes: Choose 3 flavor adjectives to describe your vibe (e.g., “woody, deep, resilient”)
  • Circle Role: Are you the roller, the joker, the spiritual guide, or the one who always coughs?

2.6 Your Character Sheet

Your sheet will include:

  • Name / Pronouns / Class / Background
  • Strain Alignment
  • Stats + Weedcraft
